Beauchamps, near Avranches, in the Cotentin, was part of the barony of St-Denis le Gaste. Hug o de Belcamp is written in Domesday as holding a great barony, comprising 37 lordships in Bed ford, Buckingham and Hertford. Hugh is said to have had three sons, Simon, Pagan, and Milo. T his great family, one of whom was among the founders of the order of the Garter, was the sam e race as the Grenvilles, Meurdracs, Montagues and were the ancestors of the earls of Warwick. Three or four under-tenants of Beauchamp of Bedford derived their names from places within th e single canton of Tilly-sur-Seulles: Wimund de Taissel from Tessel, William de Locels from L oucelles, and Serlo de Ros from Rots. The fourth is Osbert de Broilg, who Round suggests ma y have derived from Brouay, pointing out however that the Domesday form is more suggestive o f Breuil, a name borne by several places in Calvados, though not in the canton of Tilly. Thes e facts suggest further that the original home of the Beauchamps is to be sought in Calvados , but of the only two Beauchamps in that department one is a fief in Moyaux, cant. Lisieux, 7 6 kil. E of Tilly-sur-Seulles, and the other in Vouilly, cant Isigny, 32 kil W of it, and i t is impossible to draw any sound inference from such evidence. [Anglo-Norman Families, pp. 2 0-21]
