His paternal grandfather was Abraham Smith and his paternal grandmother is Isabelle Unknown; his maternal grandparents are James Paul and Mary Jane Rider. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named William, Toliver, Archibald, Robert, Floyd, William, Living, Elizabeth Jane and Luisa or Louisa. He died at the age of 61 on February 13th, 1924.
