John Smalley 
John was born on January 30th, 1722.1 John's father was Samuel Smalley and his mother is Anna Hatch. His paternal grandfather was Samuel Smalley and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeath Heard. He has four brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Joshua, Benjamin, James, Anna, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary. He is the third oldest of the nine children.General Notes

Was an officer in the English Army. Being a land surveyor he was s
en t, in 1762, to run out a military road from the Kennebec to Canada, a
nd w as unintentionally shot by one of his party when in the woods, by bei
ng in distincltly seen and mistaken for some animal. He was instantly kil
le d. He is represented as a "large , dark complexioned,, stately, cou
rt ly , and handsome man." His desk, chest and commission are preserve
d. Af ter his death his widow, of whom traditions, was married to one Has
kins, b ut her last days were spent in the home of her son Henry, at Limin
gtion. S everal of the Smalls settled in town.

John and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on April 1st, 1748 in Scarboro, Maine.1 They had six sons and two daughters, named Edward, Henry, Daniel, Zacheus, John, Francis, Dorcas and Rachel.
