Members of First Church of New Britain.  The following list compris
es t he names , with their chronological numbers, of those who have been c
ommun icants of the first Church of Christ in New Britain, from its organi
zatio n, April 19, 1758, to 1867 A periooc of one hundred and nine ye
ar s.                 1. John Smalley was fitted for college by his pasto
r, R ev. Eleazer Wheelock, and entered Yale at eighteen years of age; grad
uat ed 1756, made a profession of religion at college, studied divinity wi
th D r. Bellamy , of Bethlehem, Conn. , invited to preach in New Britai
n, Nov ., 1757, was recommended from the church in Cornwall, to the chur
ch in Ne ew Britain, Rev. Hezekiah Gold, pastor was ordained at the gather
ing of t he church , April19, 1758; He m. April 24, 1764, He bought Willi
am Patters on, 1759, the Elnathan Smith place, now 1862m the Rhodes plac
e, on East st reet, for oe 300, and resided there until 1788, when he boug
ht the house a nd lot of Lemuel Smith , for oe169, where he lived and whe
re he died , Ju ne 01, 1820, age 86.
