His paternal grandparents were John,Jr. Smalley and Lydia Martin; his maternal grandfather was John Gardner and his maternal grandmother is UNKNOWN Hannah. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Martha, Mary and Experience. He was the youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 37 in June 1779 in Woodbridge , Middlesex Co.
