Joshua was born on March 13th, 1874 in Perry, KY.1 Joshua's father was Henry Ritchie and his mother was Sarah Smith. His paternal grandparents were Gabriel Ritchie and Nancy Campbell. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named William R., Samuel A., Joshua, John, Elijah, Benjamin, Henry David, Lucinda and Elizabeth. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named George, Isom, Chester, Taylor, Althena, Louellen and Lutisha.
