Her maternal grandparents were Jonathan Basham and Virginia Elizabeth Jones. She had a brother and eight sisters, named Thomas Jefferson, Malinda, Elizabeth Basham, Mary E., Ann, Marsella, Martha, Nancy E. and Susan E.. She had a half-brother named James III.
