His paternal grandparents were John Brady Martin and Mellison Manning. He had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Lewis William T., John, Reason White, Julius Courtney, Robert Benjamin Franklin, Anthony D., William Worthington, Mary E., Milla Virginia, Millie V., Martha Bell, Margaret, Lydia Courtney and Ann.
