MAN WITH LARGE FAMILY GETS NO MERCY IN COURT
The man whom Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt was interested about two years ag
o, be cause he was in prison and the father of such a big family, was ba
ck on t he prison list yesterday after conviction of bootlegging in Feder
al Court.
The man, william McKinley Hash , 42 of near Hibernia, Kentucky, was reco
gi zed as the occupant of a car containing liquor seized by Alcohol Contr
ol a gents last April.  Herman R. Skaggs, 21, of 631 South 3rd, work
er at Tu be Turns, who never had a police record pleaded quilty to the cha
rge of tr ansporting the whiskey.  He denied Hash was guilty, saying a Neg
ro wh om he did not know, was riding in the car. Skaggs was living near Ca
mpbell sbille at the time.
Same old plea made.
Hash pleaded for mercy. However, Federal Judge Shecklford Miller, citi
ng t he man's record, daid the appeals are always based on the large famil
y- ei ght children under 14. Assistant U. S. District Attorney J. D. Inm
an recom ended four years on the first count and three on the second coun
t. The jud ge sid he felt constrained to conside the family and sentenc
ed Hash to t wo years.  Skaggs was sentenced to a year and a Day. Judge Mi
ller remark ed that no one would believe his story and the jury evident
ly had not. "H ad you told the truth, the court awould consider probatio
n. You come he re to take a rap for Hash. There has been too much perjur
ed testimony, n ot only in this case but in several others. the court is f
ed up with perju red testimony."
Attorneys Ask Mercy
Claude hudgins, attorney for Skaggs, and co-counsel George Bertram, Camp
be llsvilel, asked for mercy for Hash.
"A man can't make a living up in that counry , " Mr. Hudgins told the c
ou rt "That may be true, but the court can't sit here and make that a lic
en se for breaking the laws. I'll tell Hash now if he ever appears be
fo re me again, I'll put him away for a long time," said the judge.
Hardest his by the proceedings was Skagg's child -wife of two weeks, E
ff ie McAneer Skaggs, who was "15 last April," but looks 11. She so
bb ed in a corridor. She said her parents lived in Nelson County , but s
he "w ill get a job here if I can."
