Private in Co. A, 2nd Kentucky Calvary Federal Army. While on  patr
ol du ty in the  Army of General Sherman on its march from Atlanta To Sava
nna h, Georgia, he was captured by enemy at Vanworth, Georgia. Was impris
on ed at Cahaba, Alabama. Paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 21, 1
86 5. A few days after parole he was severly injured in the Sultana Steam
er d isaster on April 27, 1865, near Memphis, Tennessee. He was badly bu
rn ed in the fire and explosion that sank the steamboat. He spent the ne
xt f ew months in military hosptals and he was discharge from the Ar
my in Augu st 1865.  He returned to LaRue Co., Kentucky and lived there un
til 186 9. He then moved to the state  of Kansas for 12 years and th
en to Arizo na for 22 years. He was a farmer in the town of Tombston
e, at the time f or famous gunfighters. The last ten years of his life we
re spent in Los An geles, California in an old Soldiers home. James fil
ed for a pension in De cember of 1885. He died of stomach cancer on June 0
4, 1914 in the vetera ns home and is buried in Los Angeles. He died wi
th no money or heirs.
