Elijah Griffin Coates 
Elijah Griffin was born on January 15th, 1838 in Hickman Co., Tennessee.1 Elijah Griffin's father was James Alex Coats and his mother was Rose Anna Johnson. He had two brothers and six sisters, named James Alexander, Samuel J., Sara, Mary Jane, Matilda Katherine, Frances, Lucretia Cordelia and Louella. He died at the age of 63 on November 22nd, 1901 in Hickman Co., Tennessee. He was buried in Coates Cem., on Defeated Creek, Hickman Co., Tennessee.1 1 General Notes

19 41) on November 15, 1874. He enlisted in service on December 7, 1861 u
nd er the command of Capt. Sol George of Nunnelly, Tenn. He was captur
ed at F ort Donelson on February 16, 1862 and exchanged in prisoner sw
ap at Vicksb urg, MS on September 23, 1862. His brother James Alexander en
listed in t he same Company the same day that Elijah Griffin was exchange
d. Elijah Gri ffin and his wife are both buried in the Coates Cemete

Elijah Griffin and Mary Frances were married in a religious ceremony on November 15th, 1874 in Hickman Co., Tennessee.1 They had four sons and five daughters, named Demsey Harrington, John Alton, Robert Belfield, Walter Andrew, Anna Laura, Dessie, Ethel Lela, Mary Clemmie and Sarah Elizabeth.
