Nathaniel Chapman being sworn accordingly to law deponeth and saith th
at Jeremiah Basham enlisted in Cumberland County in the State of Virgin
ia in the early part of the year 1778 for during the war
into the company commanded by Capt Stubblefield into the Regiment command
ed by Colonel Richard Parker in the Virginia line on continental establish
ment. Deponent further sayeth that he served with
said Bassham in the same company and regiment from the year 1778 until t
he surrender of Charleston, South Carolina at which time and place said Ba
ssham and all the troops in Charleston were taken
prisoners and remained prisoners of war until few days previous to the su
rrender of Wallis at Yorktown in Virginia. Deponent further sayeth that sa
id Bassham served in the capacity of a corporal or
serjent until he was taken prisoner--deponent was on board of the same pr
ison ship with said Bassham and was exchanged with said Bassham at William
sburg and further sayeth that said Bassham was
ordered to Yorktown and then joined the Continental Army again and he (th
is deponent) was discharged and returned to Cumberland County his te
rm of enlistment having expired previous thereto deponent
further sayeth that said Bassham served out his term of enlistment and w
as honourable discharged in 1783 and that in 1784 deponent and said Bassh
am moved to Bedford County and that he has been
acquainted with said Bassham ever since until his death. Deponent furth
er sayeth that the regiment which they served in was called Parkers detach
ment but the number he does not remember and that
Colonel Parker was killed at Charleston during the siege and further saye
th not.
