Cokley Sherman's father was Jacob Edward Austin and his mother was Mary Ann Baker.  His paternal grandparents were John T Austin and Eliza Emaline Mason; his maternal grandparents were Dempsey Baker and Alice Appling. He has four brothers and four sisters, named Chester Winfield, John Gabel, Millard Eric, Roy Ertis, Eliza Anthaline, Emma Myrl, Ocie May and Willie Pearl.
