Moved to Goodwill, West Virginia in 1889 to work in a newly opened coal mine. In 1890 he purchased a farm on Wright Mountain, near Lashmeet, West Virginia. He was one of the founders of Wesley Chapel Church and served as a Methodist minister for thirty-five years.
Was seven years old when he was brought over from Wales. They settled in Ohio. They liked to sing.
