The
first o f the new design ation seems to have been B eth, who as either
Earl
o f Fife o r M oray (more probably the form er) is re c orded as hav ing b

en
activ e in 111 5.  (The historic figu re M acbeth wa s son o f a Morma er
of
Moray, an d sin ce "M ac" means "son of" ther e may b e a connecti on.)
Ho wever, another figu re refe rred t o as Earl of Fif e abo ut the same
time
,
that is to say durin g t he r eign of David I (reig ne d 112 4-1153), is a
shad owy pe rsonage cal led in co nt emporary documents e it he r "Ed" or
"He
ad" and id entifiedby le ading authori ties with Edelread, s o n of Malcol
m
III (reign ed 1 058-93). Yet a third Earl of Fi fe appears to h ave
e xisted
in the person of C onstant in e, wh o died in t he late 1120's. (It is
possible that "Ed/Hea d " wa s real l y Earl of Forthrev e .
The first person t o hold the Earldom of F ife on a her editar y basis may
w e ll have bee n Gill emicel MacDuff, who died a bo ut th e mid-1130's.
Certainly t h e t itle r emain ed in his fami ly, passing a lmost alw a ys
from
father to son, ti ll 13 53, w h en the 8th Earl's only child, E lizab eth
or
Isabel, became C oun te ss o f F ife.  She marri ed four times, ea ch of
her
hu sba nds bein g known as Ear l o f Fife in right of his wife. Sh edied
without issue, having made ove r th e E arldom to her s ec ond husba nd's
broth er Robert S tewart, Earl of Ment eith , h er 2nd husband and he
be ing
