eminent

of his r eign , patic ipating inthe im mo rtal achievement o f tha t era

ran c e and Sc otland, and 17 October, 1346, he was one of th e com
manders
in the f amous bat tle of N eville's Cro ss, nea r Durha m.  He is
par ticularly mentio ne d as an obj ect of th e king's gratitude in his
letter of t h anks dated 20 Oct ober , writt en on the occas ion of that
celebrated victor y wh en D avid , King of Scotland, was ta ken pri soner.

cl ear she was i n the field prior to i ts commenc eme nt, when she ro de

"sweetly exhorted th em. "  S he was a ttended by Lord D'Eyncourt at the
h e ad of her g uard, a post of hono ur and responsibilit y, which shows
tha
t he w as deemed one of the fir st ge nt lem en of his day.  Th i s is
further
ev id enced by the circmstance that Jo hn, K ing o f France, tak en
prisoner
at the bat tle o f Poictiers -- who , dur in g his captivity in Eng land,
was
t r eated with that r e spect and generousi ty which shed a lustre ov er
thos
e
time s -- was consigne d to Lord D'Eyncou rt' s custody and so rema ined
unt i l the period wh en he pass ed out to Linco lns hi re, u nder Lord
D'E yncour t 's cha rge, the metr opolis and t hence t o Fran ce, K ing
Edward
himsel f co nducting him to the seas ide , and the Bl ack Pri nce attend
ing
him to Ca la is , having fel t h is durance so little per so nally irksome
,
t hat he aft erwa r ds returned on a vi sit to K ing Edwa rd, and died in
Englan d b efore it was c ompleted.  On May 14, 1347, L ord D' Eyncour t
was
commanded to at t end the ki ng before Calais, and was p res en t at all t

in teresting scen ens t here enac tedand, a t the final surr end e r of th

p lace, followed by the heroi c self- devotion of six of the inhabi tan
ts,
who, with E ustac e S t. Pierre a t their head, were saved by te gent le b
ut
