His paternal grandparents are Jeremiah Witten and Sarah Or Sally; his maternal grandparents were Henry Skaggs and Nancy Davis. He had three brothers and a sister, named James M, Thomas, Martin and Sally Or Sarah Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the five children.
