Her paternal grandparents were Henry Neff and Mary Decker; her maternal grandparents were Peter Wilhelm Schneiders and Thecla Bruns. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Henry, John, George J., Willard, Mary, Annie or Anna and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the eight children.
