His paternal grandparents were Mathias Gayhart I Young and Maria Tate; his maternal grandfather was Marshall Tilford Monday and his maternal grandmother is Rebecca Miller. He has six brothers and a sister, named John H., Albert, William, Joseph, George, Benjamin H. and Mary A.. He is the oldest of the eight children.-
