Stephen was born on September 19th, 1811 in Benton, Yates, New York. Stephen's father was Nathan WHEELER and his mother was Elizabeth "Betsy" WHEELER. His paternal grandparents were George WHEELER and Catherine LYON; his maternal grandfather was William WHEELER and his maternal grandmother is Mrs William WHEELER. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry Ammon, Henry Avery, Enoch S., Barney Horton, Lydia and Caroline. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
