His paternal grandparents were James WHEELER and Mary EVERETT; his maternal grandfather was Hezikiah JOHNSON and his maternal grandmother is Hannable PIERSON. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Joseph, Mary, Ann, ABIGAIL and PHEBE. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
