John Thompson was born in 1789 in , Albemarle, Virginia. John Thompson's father was Richmond WALTON and his mother was Elizabeth Thompson. His paternal grandparents are Edward WALTON and Frances Thompson; his maternal grandparents were ROBERT Thompson and Jane UNKNOWN. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Ison W., Francis Hart, Edward Byerus, Edmund Pendleton, Richmond Terrill, Joel, Elizabeth Thomson, Mary Carlton, Dyce Boalis (Dicey Boales), Jane P. and Kerenhappuch (Carey Ann) (Carean H.).
