Jan was born about 1709 in Bedford, (brooklyn), Kings, New York. Jan's father was Paulus VANDER VOORT and his mother was Neeltje Janse STAATS. His paternal grandparents were Paulus Michaelsy VANDER VOORT and Lijsbeth PAULUS DIRCKSEN; his maternal grandparents were Jan Janse STAATS and Anne (Annetje) Pieterse PRAT OR PRAA. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Paul, John, Peter, Paul, Michael, Nicholas Sr., Elizabeth, Elsie, Elsje and Neeltje. He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
