Ethelwald's father was Harald II Fra Danmark and his mother is Elgiva Elfgifu' of Wessex. His paternal grandfather was Gorm Fra Danmark and his paternal grandmother is Sida Fra Danmark; his maternal grandfather was Aethelred I, King of Wessex and his maternal grandmother is Fadburn of Wessex.
