Henry was born about 1330 in Scotland. Henry's father was William Sinclair. His paternal grandfather was Henry Sinclair and his paternal grandmother is Alice De Fenton. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the three children. He died in 1404 in Scotland.

He is said to have explored as far south as Rhode island and Massachusetts before returning to Scotland. Clan Sinclair celebrated the 600th anniversary of that event in 1998.
