Catherine was born in 1848 in , Jefferson, Mo.  Catherine's father is Peter Schmidt and her mother is Elizabetha Diel. She had three sisters named Elizabeth, Elizabeth Nancy and Anna "Gertrude".  She is the second youngest of the four children.
