Jane was born about 1548 in Of Samlesbury, Blackburn, Lancashire, England. Jane's father was John SOUTHWORTH and her mother is Mary ASHETON GOULAND. Her paternal grandfather was Thomas SOUTHWORTH and her paternal grandmother is Margery BUTLER; her maternal grandfather was Richard ASHTON and her maternal grandmother is Anne STRICKLAND. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Richard, Christopher, Thomas, Gilbert, Leonard, Stanley, Mary, Margaret and Anne. She was the oldest of the twelve children.
