James Mathias was born on November 16th, 1859 in , Rutherford, Tennessee. James Mathias' father was Archibald G. SLOAN and his mother was Margaret W. JETTON. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Isaac N., John P., Archibald Martin, William A., Newton Yaniel, Ann Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary W. and Margaret Jerusha. He was the second youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 82 on October 10th, 1942 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford, Tennessee.
