Name Prefix:<NPFX> Earl
Also Known As:<_AKA> "Hotspur"
Henry Percy was a Knight of the Garter in 1387. From 1384 Henry assisted his father as warden of the eastern marches. Known as "Hotspur" probably because of his rapid riding, Henry won an outstanding reputation for bravery in border fighting. At the battle of Otterburn against the Scots in 1388, his valour in slaying the Scots leader, James, Second Earl of Douglas, sealed his reputation - despite his capture. In 1402 he helped his father win the battle of Homildon Hill against the Scots, capturing their leader Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas. He quarrelled with Henry IV over the king's refusal to exchange Douglas for Sir Edmund Mortimer, brother-in-law of "Hotspur", and in 1403 he joined his Father's plot to replace the king with Edmund. In July that year he died fighting against the king at the battle of Shrewsbury. To prove his death, his head was exhibited at York, his body at Shrewsbury. (The War of the Roses: 46, 58-61, 84, 101-4)
