Being at theconflict at Locherby, in the year 1593, assisting his kinsman, LordMaxwell, against the Laird of Johnston, was there slain, and wassucceeded [as laird of the line] by his son, Robert, who was married toJean, daughter of James Mowat of Busby, and by her had his eldestdaughter, name unknown, married to John Pollok of Balgray, whose issueseems to have failed; also, 1. Robert; 2. Helen, married to RobertMarshall, writer in Glasgow, by whom she had no surviving issue. ThisRobert acquired the superiority of the estate from the Earl of Nithsdale, and came thereby again to hold it of the crown. From Clan Pollock about descendancy of Robert the Bruce: Sir John[Janet's husband] was the son of John Pollok and Margaret Sempel. SirJohn was with the forces of Mary, Queen of Scots, and on the losing sideat the Battle of Langside on 13 May 1568. The battle lasted only threequarters of an hour. "Compared to any of the great battles in ScottishHistory, the battle was no more than a skirmish; yet, for the time, itsettled the destiny of Scotland. It established the Reformed religion, put an end to the French Alliance and shattered the last hopes of MaryStewart."
