John was born about 1720 in Of Farr, Sthrln, Sctl.  John's father was Adam MCKAY and his mother is Elizabeth MCKAY OR MACKAY. He has five brothers and three sisters, named Donald, Isaac, Robert, George, Adam, Margaret, Barbara and Catherine.  He is the oldest of the nine children.
