Grymes Holcomb is recorded as the occupant for whom the commonwealth of Va. surveyed 554 acres on Nov. 26, 1772, on the waters of branches of Town and Chesnut Creeks in Pittsylvania Co., Va. which county was formed in 1766. When Henry Co. was formed in 1776, in part, from Pittsylvania Co., this 554 acres track was cut off into Henry Co. When Franklin Co. was organized in 1786 in part from henry Co., this same 554 acres again changed counties to Franklin Co., where it remains.
Persuant to said survey of Nov. 26, 1772, a patent for this 554 acres was issued to Grymes Holcombe March 1, 1781. Grymes Holcombe died as a resident of Henry Co. before August 11, 1781, when the Court of Henry County appointed to appraise and return an inventory of the personal property of his estate John and Hugh Woods and henry Martin, designating him as "Grimes Halkum". This return shows the personal property of his estate included 6 horses, 11 cattle, 22 hogs, farm equipment, household furnishings, etc. The Court clerk recorded an order approving said return Nov. 22, 1781. The value of the items totaled £25,428, which may indicate inflation of values following the American Revolution. The price of one horse was stated as £12,000; of two beds and furniture £2,800; saddle and two bridles, £250; shot gun, £150.
Jeriah(?) Holcomb as administratrix of the estate of Grimes Holcombe, deceased of henry Co.Va., sined a deed there July 25, 1782, in consideration of "£100 current money of Va." conveying to Michael Rowland of Henry Co. the acres of the waters of branches of Town and Chesnut Creeks in Henry Co. which was granted to the said Grymes Holcombe in Richmond." This deed was recorded in henry Co. by order of the Court on proof made July 25, 1782.
As Town and Chesnut creeks do not flow together modern maps place this home tract of grymes Holcombe astride a divide of their waters in present Franklin Co., Va., near its contact with the northwest corner of present Henry Co.
