Joseph was born on August 19th, 1797 in , Bourbon, Ky. Joseph's father was John HUFFMAN and his mother was Cathrine LYTER. His paternal grandfather was John HOFFMAN and his paternal grandmother is Cathrine UNKNOWN; his maternal grandparents were Henry LEITER and Catherine BEAVER. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Philip, John Smith, Michael, Elijah Lyter, Cathrine and Sally. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
