His paternal grandparents were Ellis HOLCOMBE and Elizabeth SYDENHAM; his maternal grandfather was Thomas TRETHURFFE and his maternal grandmother is Mary TREVISA. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Christopher, Gilbert, Josias, Robert, John, Christopher, Josias, Josias and Margaret. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
