Markus was born on March 20th, 1866 in Midhus, Storolfshvoll, Rangarvalla, Iceland and his baptism took place on March 21st, 1866 in , Storolfshvoll, Rangarvalla, Iceland. Markus' father was Gesli BODVARSON and his mother was Elin Or (Ellen) JONSSON. His paternal grandparents are Bodvar BUDMUNDSSON and Gudrun GISLASON; his maternal grandfather was Jon JONSSON and his maternal grandmother is Kristin OLAFSSON. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Johan Christian, Gudmundur, Thorstein, Gesli Geslison, Kristolina and Maria. He was the third youngest of the seven children.
