John was born in 1528 in St. Mary Overy, Devon, Eng.  John's father was Henry Phippen OR FITZPEN and his mother is Alice PIERCE. He had two brothers named Joseph and John.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 55 in 1583 in Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England.
