Lawrence was born in 1730 in Orange County, , Virginia. Lawrence's father was John James FITZGERALD and his mother was Mary UNKNOWN. His paternal grandparents are Walter FitzGerald and Mrs. Fitzgerald. He had three brothers named James Stephen, William Alexander and THomas. He was the youngest of the four children.
