Alexander was born about 1549 in Of Gogar, , Scotland. Alexander's father was John ERSKINE and his mother is Margaret CAMPBELL. His paternal grandfather was Robert ERSKINE and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth CAMPBELL; his maternal grandfather was Archibald CAMPBELL and his maternal grandmother is Elizabeth Stuart. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Arthur, Robert, Thomas, John, Katherine, Janet, Margaret and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the nine children.
