Alan (Alanus) was born in 1279 in Of, Clavering, Essex, England and his baptism took place in (28-1307). His paternal grandfather is Roger FitzJohn De Baliol CLAVERING and his paternal grandmother was Isabel UNKNOWN; his maternal grandparents were Alan II, De La ZOUCHE and Helen (Ellen) De QUINCY. He had six brothers and a sister, named John Fitz Robert De, Edmund, Alexander, Robert, Henry, Roger and Eupheme Fitzroger. He was the youngest of the eight children.
