Her paternal grandparents were Richard Betts and Joanna Chamberlain; her maternal grandparents were Daniel Whitehead and Abigail Stevenson. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Daniel, Mercy, Abigail, Joanna, Mary and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the nine children.
