BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
In the region south of Altoona, PA and not far from where t he Pennsylvania R.R. now rounds the Horseshoe Curve to moun t the Alleghany divide, there were in the days previous t o the Revolution Stifflers located along the streams and i n the valleys. This region south to Bedford has been the re siding place of the ancestors of many branches of the famil y at some time during that past 160 years, altho (sic) ther e were those who remained in Maryland and York County, Penn sylvania, and others who settled north of Altoona.
Peter Stiffler had land on Dunning Creek in 1788, and Jaco b Stifler (sic) bought land near McKee Gap in 1783. These t wo brothers, reported to have come from Germany in 1742, ha d in accordance with their wills, 11 and 10 children, respe ctively, all of whom grew to have families, intermarrying w ith the Beegles, Wilts, Helsels, Wertz, Harle, Claar, Feath er, Clapper, Corl, Hollar, Holderbaum, Shaw, Sell, Koon, Le ighty, Yingling, Ticherhof, Brumbaugh, Hoover, Mauk, Deiber t, McCormick, and many others - all early settlers in thi s region before 1800.
Here are located early homestead of the fathers, grandfathe rs, great grandfathers, of a thousand or more Stiffler an d related descendants. To those of us farther removed, thi s region has a lure and a fascination as the testing ground s for the making of Stiffler pioneers. Here the wildernes s was conquered, the Indians outwitted, and an early histor y says, "until the completion of the Sarah furnace propert y in 1832, the residents were denied the advantages of mark ets for the sale of surplus products, and male alike were c lad in homespun, home-made garments. indeed, during those y ears, few young men and women could boast of having been in side a dry goods store."
For 25 years, annual reunions of the Stiffler Family of Cen tral Pennsylvania have been held in this region. It has bee n suggested that a National Reunion be held in 1942, celebr ating the 200th anniversary of the coming of the first Stif flers to America. Will this region from Altoona to Bedfor d see the return of hundreds of her children whose ancestr y had, a century before, gone forth to help make the new Na tion?
