His paternal grandparents were Budwine Count Of Metz and Richilde D'arles; his maternal grandparents were Louis UNKNOWN and Engelberge D'alsace. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Louis, Hugh, Kunigunde, Willa Gisele, Engelberge and Ermengarde. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
