Isabel Fitzgilbert De Clare 
Isabel Fitzgilbert was born in 1174 in Pembrokeshire, Wales.1 Isabel Fitzgilbert's father was Richard (Strongbow) De Clare and her mother was Eva(Aoife) Mc Murrough. Her paternal grandparents were Gilbert Fitzgilbert De Clare and Isabel (Elizabeth) De Beaumont; her maternal grandparents were Diarmait Na-Ngall Macmurrough and Mor Ingen Muirchertaig O'toole. She had a brother and a sister, named Gilbert and Alina. She was the youngest of the three children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, Gilbert, Matilda Maude and Joane. Wiston must rank as one of the best-preserved motte and bailey ca stles in
Wales. It was named after, and probably built by, an early Flemish
settler with the improbable name of Wizo (in Latin) or Gwys (welsh). Wizo
wa s dead by 1130, but the castle is first mentioned in documents in 1147
when i t was taken by the Welsh. It was again taken by the Welsh in 1193,
when it fe ll, apparently with the aid of treachery, to Hywel Sais, the
son of the Lord Rhys, but was recaptured in 1195. In 1220, however, it
was captured by Llywel yn the Great, prince of Gwynedd, during one of his
campaigns in south Wales. The local people were told to help William
Marshal, earl of Pembroke, to rebu ild it. Whether or not this rebuilding
took place is uncertain. The masonry s hell-keep could be his work, but
the style of the arch suggests an earlier da te, and it is quite possible
that the fallen masonry which still lies on the north was brought down
during Llywelyn's attack.
