Cynan was born in 0504.  Cynan's father was Brychan King Of Brycheiniog and his mother was Ingenach Ferch Dyfnwal.  His paternal grandparents were Anlach Prince Of Ireland and Marchell Ferch Tewdrig; his maternal grandfather was Dumnagual Dyfnwal Hen King Of Strathclyde. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Rhun Dremrudd 'Red-Eyes', Cludwyn, Daughter Of Brychan, Gwladys, Lluan and Tydwall.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
