He owned a drug store in Benona, MI which burned in 1870. After 1869 they res. in Oceana Co , MI. Ransom invented a folding pail, a folding bath ans a portable pantry and also authore d a book, "Home Pleasures," published in Battle Creek, MI. He served w/Co H, 2nd MI CAV in th e Civil War.[dbs163] James B Sabin, 08D008E, served in the same Regt. Were they acquainted? O CCUPATION: Surgeon.  See Oceana Co (MI) Pioneers, 1890, F90165.38.

Ransom moved with his parents to St Louis, MO after 1850, where it is presumed that he got hi s medical degree.
In 1864 he enlisted in Co H, 2nd MO Cavalry.  For nearly two years he cared for sick and woun ded soldiers in the hospital at Benton Barracks, St Louis, MO.  By the time he enlisted in th e Army at age 28, Ransom had two children and had been married twice.  Ransom's first wife, A nne E Perrine, was born on 18 Sep 1836 and they were married on 25 Jul 1859. Charles Prine w as born on 13 May 1860. His birthplace is listed variously as Aurelius, Reed City and Hart .  The last town is in MI. There is no indication that Ransom moved to MI before 1869. Ann e Perrine died on 25 Apr 1861.  She may have died in childbirth, along with the child.  Ranso m married [2] Louisa M Boll in 1862.  Louisa was born on 1 May 1841.  Ransom and Louisa's dau ghter, Thera Sabin was born on 20 Apr 1864.  The couple had a son, Fred Sabin who was born o n 6 Jul 1870 in Shelby, MI.  Tragically, Fred drowned on 6 Oct 1899 in Hart Mill Pond when wo rking to move 60 logs across the pond.  A  large log capsized his boat and resusitation effor ts failed after he was rescued.  Thera had married Francis M Smith [b.1858/1859].  At the tim e of Fred's death, the local newspaper indicated that he had been supporting his sister and h er children.  Her children were Ruby [who married George Sparks] and Phillip, b. 15 Jun 1905 ; died 18 Jul 1906.  She must have had one or more other children but thier names are unknown .  On 2 Oct 1906 she married Levi Dorsh who died a few months later on 2 Jan 1907.  She marri ed George Brown in 1910 and moved to Traverse City.  Thera Sabin Dorsh Brown died in Travers e City on 3 Sep 1943.  Louisa Boll Sabin died on 22 Jun 1880 in Shelby, MI. Ransom married hi s third wife, Elvira S[tandish] Halleck on 28 Dec 1886.  She was the d/o William Halleck. Elv ira died on 27 Mar 1929.
Ransom, Louisa, Charles and Thera moved to Stony Creek in Oceana County, MI in 1869.  Ranso m Sabin assisted in the organization of Benona Lodge, No 289, F.A.M. [Free Masons?]  He owne d a drug store in Benona, which burned in 1870.  His first 15 years of experience in Oceana C ounty were full of hardships, and toils, riding day or night, rain or shine, over new and poo r roads as he followed his profession of physician and surgeon. In 1874, Ransom, his wife an d three children moved to Shelby, MI and resided in a home of Fifth St, between Elm and Mapl e Sts.  Ransom Sabin had a large medical practice and he said he had "officiated professional ly in bringing into this world over 1,000 new inhabitants" to Oceana County.  Dr Sabin was i n many ways an extraordinary man.  His inventive genius was marked and he held 42 patents per taining to medical aids.  He invented a folding drinking cup,
a bed that raised [similar to modern hospital beds], a folding rubber pail, folding baths, an d a portable panty.  I he had not died at an early age [55] his patents could have made him r ich.  During the late 1800's his health began to fail and Dr Sabin went South during the wint ers and returned to Shelby for the summers.  His obituary characterized him "Although unfavor ed by advantages, his ability and faithfulness to duty made him a man of note and usefulnes s in the community."  After years of work he completed a book, Home Treasure, published by Wm .
C Gage & Son, Printers, Battle Creek, MI in 1890.  The complete title and subtitle of the boo k is:  The Home Treasure. AGuide to Health, Wealth and Happiness. The five departments or sec tions of the book were: Home, Medical, Culinary, Farriery and Miscellaneous.  This is a wonde rful book and is filled with short articles about living and life in the 1890's. Much of hi s advice is still relevant to successful living a century later.  The book provided, as well , helpful tips for daily living in the 1890's, such as how to make paint and soap.  It contai ned recipes for all kinds and even gave advice on the treatment of different illnesses and ho w to treat and care for animals.  Ransom Neil Sabin died in Shelby, MI on Saturday, 10 Oct 18 91.  His obituary said "Dr R.Sabin has cast off his burdens and laid down in the arms of deat h after years of unceasing and untiring labor he was not permitted to finish the enterprise s which have so long occupied his mind, but at the time when he was ready to enjoy the fruit s of works, he is called to meet his maker."
