John was born in 1612 in Cranford, Suffolk Co., England.1 John's father was Thomas Russ and his mother was Thomazin Stanfield. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Russhe and Priscilla Cloville; his maternal grandfather was John Stanfield. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Anthony, Thomazin, Jane, Margaret and Frances. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
