Ralph or Ranulph de Merlay signed his father's grant of Morwick to the church of Durham, and after his father's death in 1129 went to Durham. In 1138 he founded the Abbey of Newminster, which, according to Richard de Hexham, was destroyed in the same year by the marauding army of David, King of Scotland. He had a grant from Henry I of the woods, enclosure and free chase of Eichamp, now Ulgham. He had William, Roger, the First and Osbert. Newminster was restored as they were all buried in the north part of the Chapter House.
