One of Long Island's outstanding Indians fo the earliest era was the Montauk Cockenoe. Captured by the Pequots of New England as a youth and sold to Richard Calicott of Dorchester, Ct. , he there became acquainted with the Rev.John Eliot who was engaged in reanslating the Bible into the simple language used commonly by the tribes in this part of the country . Wrote Eliotof Cockenoe :"HE was the first I made use of to teach me words, and to be my interpreter."At the same time , it seems, the young Indian becane adept in English and upon reurning to Long Island in 1646 used his knowledge to assist WYANDANCE of the Montawks and sachems in their land dealings with the colonists. Cockenoe also learned to survey land and assisted botth the settlers and the Indians in establishing boundaries. In one boundry dispute on Shelter Island he journeyed to Hartford and obtained he backing of the provincial authorities in behalf of Manhansets' interests. His name appears as Cockenoe, Checkenoo, Chickeno , Chekkonnow and even as Cuckoo on manu old deeds of Hempstead, Huntington and other Long Island towns. He dwelt on Montauk and married a sister of WYANDANCE ( Quashawan.. who became sachem of the Sinnecock tribe at the death of her other brother , Nowedonah )
Although best known in his day for his part in defending the rights of Indians, Cockenoe also gave much time to messionary work among the various tribes.
He became a close friend of the Rev. Thomas James of East Hampton and assisted him in translating vaarious religious works. He died prior to 1702 and was, it is velieved ,buried somewhere in Montauk.
