In the First Century B.C., the region later known as Brabant was occupied by the Romans, coming under possession of the Franks in the 5th Century, A.D. With the disintegration of the Frankish Empire in the 9th Century, it was included first in the duchy of Lorraine and later of Lower Lorraine.
