Joan was born in 1300 in Castle Cary, North Cadbury, Somersetshire, England.1 Joan's father was Richard Lovel Baron of Cary Lovel and her mother was Muriel Douglas. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Lovel Baron of Cary Lovel and Alianore Lovel. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Eleanor.
